As a student it’s hard to find the time to get all of your studying, homework, and extra curricular activities done with what little time you have after class. But to add a part-time job on top of all that? That’s insane! Many of us don’t have any other choice. We have to make money somehow, and there are usually limited opportunities available around town.
Let’s see if you can relate to me on this. One of the jobs I had going through college was working at a bakery. I had to wake up by 4:30 am to start frying up the donuts! I’d work all morning, and have to be to class by 9:30. I was constantly exhausted and it really affected my schoolwork. All for a measly $6.00 an hour! But I had to work in order to pay for food, and this job was one of the only ones available in the area that fit my schedule.
I knew there had to be another option. Maybe I could try to earn all the money I needed for school during the summer. I tried door to door summer sales with the promise that I could earn huge bucks and be financially set for the year. The reality though hit me like a one ton sausage. After working my butt off all summer, I came home with a bill!
I started thinking of other ways to make money that didn’t require five hours of my time after school (or before school for that matter), and that of course paid for my needs.
The internet… Yes, I had heard that people were making money through the internet, but how? I had to know. I started dreaming about the flexibility it could offer because I wouldn’t be limited by work time constraints and a wimpy student wage. I’d be free to set my own schedule based on my own priorities.
So as I started exploring the, literally, thousands of ways to make money through the internet, and I immediately felt exhausted. Affiliate Marketing, building websites, translating, selling your web design services online, becoming a math/english/mechanical engineering tutor, selling on ebay, selling on craigslist, selling your drawings, working as a remote customer service rep, being a personal virtual assistant…ok, I think you get the idea. It can be really overwhelming! It personally took me many months just to grasp which one would suit me the best. Let alone actually diving into a method and making money from it.
I did alot of research. I figured out what my strengths and my weaknesses were and I matched it up to a few different options. I figured out what each option entailed in terms of the relationships I’d have to establish, the time and money commitment (many make money through the internet options are free, some require little money upfront), and how much I would enjoy the tasks associated with the work.
After some trial and error, I decided that building a website that would help fellow students like myself was the best option for me. It leans on my strengths in graphic design, newspaper writing and reporting, international relations, and research. I get to meet and talk to new people from around the world. But most importantly, it allows me to build income on my own time. I’m no longer worried about having to wake up super early for a bakery job or going to work straight after classes. I’m finally in control!
